Amber Davis

Amber DavisHi, I'm Amber and through my blog I hope to give you a flavour of what it's like working at Yorkshire Water day to day.

If you've got any questions about what I'm doing or what it's like to work here please post a comment and I'll get back to you. You can also read my case study to find out more about my role as a project engineer.

My new role

Amber Davis, 02/04/2009

Since March 1st I was promoted to Senior Project Engineer, which I'm very happy about. It not only makes me feel recognised for my contribution to the company but recent changes have meant I am now more heavily involved in some really exciting projects.

Over the passed weeks I have been getting really involved in energy optimisation at some of our largest sites. We are working together in small groups to address issues on-site, as well as putting plans into place. It's really interesting work and also very satisfying when things go to plan.

I have also been given a new capital scheme to work on, it is one of the top two biggest sites in the company with respect to the population equivalent that it treats. I have started on the project at the commissioning stage which I think is by far the most exciting. Responsibility towards the planning on how we bring new assets on-line at such a large scale requires meticulous planning and a good understanding of the process, so it's great to have been given this opportunity.

A week back at uni

Amber Davis, 15/12/2008

Another week out of the office last week as I spent 5 days on a course at Cranfield University. The level of support for my development is something I really appreciate and it was good to get the time out to improve my knowledge as well as meet new people. The course was called "Biological Processes" and covered the theory behind activated sludge as well as other treatment techniques. It was good to consolidate a lot of my knowledge that I've picked up over the past 3 years of working here, as well as link in with my operational experience. It was interesting to talk to people from other water companies to find out about their challenges and what they do to deal with them.

Luckily I don't have too much in my diary this week, so there's enough time to catch up on all the e-mails and of course look forward to the team's Christmas "do" on Friday!

Back at my desk

Amber Davis, 04/11/2008

After my travels last week I'm catching my breath and spending some time in the office, catching up on e-mails and projects - being out and about is great, but it's good to have some desk-based time to balance it out.

The trip down to London went well and the steering group reviewed the R&D project and agreed the final report, so it was fab to see the project successfully completed. On Thursday it was good to see the project technicians and hear what stages each of our new sites are at. Next time I meet them will be on their sites where we'll look at how we get their works running as well as possible.

Energy efficiency

Amber Davis, 27/10/08

Currently we're focussing on the first of our new Fresh Water Directive (FFD) sites.  It's in the early days so we are collecting energy data, looking at how our assets are running and whether we can operate them in different ways depending on the time of day or time of year. These two points are both important because we're charged differently for electricity depending on whether or not it's in a peak period. Seasonal changes can also make a difference because we can operate our plants differently depending on the temperature of the sewage.

Energy efficiency

John, Huddersfield, 26/10/08

Your last post about energy efficiency caught my eye.  This is something I have been doing in my current role and I would be interested to know what kind of things you look at and what measures you take?

Off to the Big Smoke

Amber Davis, 27/10/2008

This week is going to be hectic - but that's part of the job.  Tomorrow I'm off to London for an UKWIR (UK Water Industry Research) meeting. I've been involved in a national research project looking at how certain chemicals are removed at various stages of the waste water treatment - I'm looking forward to hearing the results as well as meeting my peers from other water companies.

On Wednesday I'm over in Huddersfield to find out more about some instruments and what place they could play in helping us with energy saving. Then on Thursday I'm meeting with our Process Tech's for a one day workshop about the processes that go on in the activated sludge process and any problems they're experiencing, now they're running the plants.

I'm finishing off the week meeting with the other technical people in my team. We only get to meet like this once a month or so, and it's a great opportunity to catch up as we all travel around a lot for our jobs.

And, finally after all this I'll be treating myself to a big glass of wine and a chocolate bar on Friday night!

A bit about my role

Amber Davis, 16/10/2008

At the moment, a lot of my time has been spent visiting some of our newly constructed sites and those which are in the process of being built. I really enjoy the sites during construction as they're constantly changing and I look forward to the time when we can take them over and start optimising the assets. Some days are more fun than others, the wet day in Hull yesterday was not as enjoyable as the sunny morning in Holmfirth today!

I've two main responsibilities depending on whether the site is being constructed or has recently been handed back to us from contractors. At Harrogate South, where we're in early stages of commissioning, there's a lot of building work still going on. I support the commissioning process to ensure it happens as quickly as possible, without risking compliance.

My second responsibility is on the new sites where our Process Technicians are working. I have just started working with our Energy Team and the Technicians to look at how our plants are operating and what we can do to make them more energy efficient.

I've also added a case study to this website to give you more of an idea about what I do and how I ended up where I am today.  Read more
