Take action
Follow our simple steps to start your journey to saving water today.
- Take regular
water meter* readings to get an idea of your average use and to help you identify leaks or faulty fittings.
- Look for leaks
- Check that the reading on your bill is similar to the reading on your meter.
- Check that all water using devices, such as toilets, urinals and ball valves are working correctly. Constant flushing of urinals and dripping taps can increase water consumption.
- Take a number of readings from your water meter over a short period when you think no water should be used (in most cases this is likely to be overnight) to help identify a leak. If you suspect a leak, turn off your internal stop tap and check for usage on your water meter, to help determine whether a leak is in or outside the building.
A simple leak test
- Choose a time when you're not using any appliances that consume water. Make sure all taps are turned off, allow all tanks and cisterns to completely fill (this can take up to 30 minutes) and take a meter reading.
- Leave all appliances turned off and take another meter reading at least an hour later.
- If there's a difference between the readings, there may be a leak. If there's no difference it's unlikely that there is a leak and there's likely to be other reasons for high usage.
Fix a leaking tap
- Fix a leaking tap - one drip from a tap every second wastes 5 litres per day. If it breaks into a stream this can waste up 3,500 litres per day
- Fit a urinal control and save 674 m3 per year!
