Helping local council go green

flow monitoring businessKirklees Council is well known for helping its residents become more environmentally friendly and is now turning its efforts to its own buildings with a little help from us.

We've been working on a preparatory project with the council to install special real-time water monitoring equipment that will enable them to track water usage moment by moment.

We've been working on a preparatory project with the council to install special real-time water monitoring equipment that will enable them to track water usage moment by moment.

Out and aboutWe're fitting pulse units - a device that picks up live information from the water meter and transfers it into flow data enabling the council to gain a better picture of how and where water is being used on their sites.

The project was initially trialled at 15 sites and because of its success the council have extended it to 40 sites. This forms part of a wider programme by Kirklees Council that aims to install sophisticated monitoring equipment for water, gas and electricity at all of its 1600 sites.

This is the first time we have worked with a local council to help them monitor water usage across a variety of sites. The project provides a great opportunity for Kirklees to identify leakage and highlight areas where potential cost savings exist and has the potential to reduce water consumption at the sites.

Chriss Duffy, Business Customer Manager for the project

The project will help protect the environment and save the Kirklees Council taxpayer money. Its objectives and results in both respects are ones that we welcome and support.

Cllr Christine Stanfield, Kirklees Cabinet Member

We felt that there were great benefits in working on this project with Kirklees Council as it has provided us with an excellent opportunity to gather information and direction on how Yorkshire Water will use Automated Meter Reading (AMR) in the future. The successful project has given us an insight into AMR performance, meter compatibility, logistical support, data cleansing and customer liaison.
