What's lurking in the sewers of Bradford

Throughout 2011, we have been carrying out a number of detailed surveys of our sewers in the Bradford area to determine just how effectively they are operating and the pin point where there might be any issues.

The scale of the operation has been massive:

  • We have been checking out 17,890 properties for blockages,
  • Lifting 6,169 manhole covers to see whether the public sewers are running freely,
  • Inspecting around 8,500 drains on customer properties
  • Putting CCTV cameras down into the sewers so that we can see any potential problems and take a suitable course of action before it impacts on our customers

So far we have uncovered 160 blockages, 32 of which were caused by people putting fat down their sinks which then solidified in their pipes.

Many of these blockages were also the responsibility of the customer to clear, which can be end up being an expensive and unnecessary outlay.

Make sure you don't fall into the same trap of pouring your fats, oils and grease down the sink. What may seem an easy and problem free way of disposing of your unwanted waste, could easily come back to bite you by causing devasting flooding to your home.
