A closer look at the sewers of Beeston
An important part of our work in the fight against internal flooding incide
nts is to carry out detailed surveys of different areas of our sewer network in a bid to discover what grime lurks beneath them. We recently sent a team to Beeston, near Leeds and this is what they did:
- Checked over 6,250 customer pipes for blockages
- Lifted 1,500 manhole covers to check the sewers beneath them were running freely
- Examined 3,000 roadside gullys
- Used high pressure water jets to clear any blockages
- Put CCTV cameras down into the sewers to monitor any potential problems
In a relatively small area like Beeston, the team made the shocking discovery of
84 separate blockages.
23 of these were caused by people putting fat down their sinks and it solidifying in their pipes. A number of these blockages occured on the customers own private supply pipes and were therefore the responsibility of the customer to clear.
Make sure you avoid having to deal with an expensive clean up operation by disposing of your fats, oils, and greases sensibly and not down the sink. Don't forget, as a Yorkshire Water customer you can
order your FREE Fat Cake and use your used cooking fat to make a tasty treat for the garden birds.
Over the next few months we will be carrying out a number of different surveys across the region and will be posting our findings here in the 'Investment' area. Keep checking to see if your town is featured.
