How we are doingHow we're doing

Our regulators check if we're doing a good job and report on our performance.

The DWI produce a drinking water report, the Environment Agency report on River Water Quality and Ofwat report on leakage, as well as producing a performance assessment which reports on a wide range of measures from interruption to supplies to complaints.

DWI stands for Drinking Water Inspectorate and Ofwat stands for Office of Water services, along with the Environment Agency, they're the Government watchdogs who check we're doing a good job.

Here's an overview of how we're doing

Sewer flooding

Sewer flooding is one of the biggest challenges we face and we're committed to eliminating it. We've reduced the number of incidents from 643 to 301 in the last six years and continue to work to reduce it further.

We appreciate this is extremely unpleasant and are investing a further £83 million to offer customers even further protection from this problem.    Find out more

River water quality

Rivers support a wide variety of wildlife and recreational activity and their quality is one of the Government's key 'Quality of Life' indicators.

We're investing £240 million to ensure many of our largest treatment works comply with the requirements of the Freshwater Fish Directive. The Environment Agency estimates that this investment programme will improve more than 250 miles of river.  We call this project Riverlife - read more here.

Water supply interruptions and pressure

We understand the inconvenience of an interruption to supply. That's why we're working on new techniques and utilising the most up-to-date technology to reduce the amount of time we need to disconnect the supply for, or removing the need altogether.  We've slashed interruptions by over two thirds in recent years, meaning Yorkshire customers now have the lowest chance of being interrupted in the UK. To find out about our new technologies click here.

The number of properties suffering from low pressure as a result of our network is just 78 of the two million customers we serve.

Drinking water quality

The drinking water we supply is of excellent quality and is regularly tested to make sure it remains this way. In 2007 we met the required standards set by the DWI in 99.96% of the tests.  Check out our performance on drinking water quality.
