Introducing Yorkshire's 'Thriftiest Granny'
Over the past few months people across Yorkshire have been sending us their best money saving thrifty tips in a bid to be crowned Yorkshire's thriftiest granny. We are now pleased to announce that one Granny from Colton in Leeds has taken the crown.
Katrina Cowell (62), mother of two and granny to nine year old Emily from Oakwood, Leeds, entered her best money saving tips into our competition and received the most customer votes for her simple thrifty tip of using tea bags twice then putting the left over bag onto garden roses - they act as an amazing compost and make roses bloom!
The good folk of Yorkshire lived up to their name of being money wise sending in simple tips from making the most of buy-one-get-one free bargains to using neat washing up liquid to get rid of crayon marks on fabric.
Katrina has a vast repertoire of tips that relate to all areas of her house proving that she really does deserve this prestigious title and the £1000 prize to take her family away on holiday.
Some of Katrina's other tips include the following:
- Put vinegar in water to wash windows and save money on expensive window cleaner - it still makes them shine
- Use old greeting cards when painting skirting boards to protect carpets, tiles, floors rather than buying the plastic sheets
- Butter and margarine containers are good to freeze fresh fruit in, also smaller tubs good for growing seeds in - saves money on buying plastic boxes or plant pots
- When sun or face creams containers are finished cut in half there will be more left than you think to use up
- When running the tap water for hot water catch any cold water in a jug to use later
The Thriftiest Granny competition is all part of our campaign to communicate what people in Yorkshire get for their money from their water bill after recent research showed that 40% of customers in Yorkshire were unaware of what they are paying for. Edna and Mary are on a mission to communicate value for money to the people of Yorkshire and will now have a little extra help from Yorkshire's thriftiest Granny!
