Tophill Low Supports National Nest Box Week
Visitors to our
Tophill Low Nature Reserve near Driffield can soon gain a rare insight into the secret life of the
kingfisher thanks to a new nest box camera being installed during
National Nest Box Week.
It is hoped that kingfishers will take up residence in this new nest box and give us a rare insight into their day-to-day lifes from within the confines of their own home.
What is National Nest Box Week?
It is run by the
British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and encourages people across the country to put a bird box in their garden to promote and enchance biodiversity and conservation of our breading birds and wildlife.
How is Yorkshire Water involved?
Our Tophill Low nature reserve near Driffield is home to over 100 species of birds and boasts over 100 nest boxes which are maintained by a team of volunteers who build, repair and monitor them on a regular basis. Kingfishers are regularly sited at the reserve and we hope that our new camera will allow people to see footage of the sites most colourful resident.
How do you make your own bird nest?
Installing a bird box and even making your own is a really simple thing to do and while providing a habitat for birds, it can become an intersting hobby watching the daily comings and goings of your new neighbours.
